Delevan tips
I sent a Delevan back to Bob last week after it quit working.
He said that the Love (or Love gas) ate up the brush spring. I mounted my pump flat but Bob told me to mount it tilted slightly toward the fittings to make sure any leakage didn't wick back up into the housing. I asked about mounting it it upside down (vertically) but he said there would be a constant influx of gaseous Love, wreaking havoc on the innards.
He fixed it up for me and now I have a spare but I want to make sure that I keep them running as long as possible.
Bob mentioned that he sees the same few problems over and over and that almost all of them are preventable.
A couple that he mentioned are
-pump too far from battery
-wrong guage wire
-improper connections
I asked him to write up an FAQ or Dos and Don'ts list for the Delevans.
Keep your eye out for it!

Re: Delevan tips
I have done a ShurFlo with 12 gauge wire with wire nuts with lots of electrical tape all over the wire nuts.
I have the wiring around 3 or 4 feet from the battery and use big alligator clips. I am sure the battery terminals for cars would be better and just connect the wires to the terminals with a switch but I was in a hurry. Later on I will get it wired up right.
When I wire up my new Delavan, I will do it right with a switch and try to keep the wires under 3 feet unless it is recommended shorter.
Is the 12 gauge wire thick enough?

Re: Delevan tips
I hope so.
That's how I have mine wired now.
Hurry up with that list, Bob!

Here is a quick drawing of the basic wiring.

Re: Delevan tips
I know that some people leave the fuse out.
How critical is it?
And I think I have a 30 amp fuse in mine. I guess I need to change it.

Re: Delevan tips
The fuse is important not just for short circuiting but also as the battery drops its charge the voltage drops. That will cause the wiring and motor to get hot. The fuse will get hot and blow saving the pump.
It is important to use a deep cycle battery and charge it nightly.
It is also important to have the proper gauge wire and good corrosive free connections. If in doubt about the proper wire size go large (10-12 gauge). The more distance between the battery and pump the more this becomes an issue.
