Light or Heat, degrades the SH?
« on: October 30, 2009, 07:58:40 AM »
Hey guys, been wondering about what it is actually that actually degrades the strength of SH.  The reason that I am wondering this is because I have thought about painting one of my clear tanks, except for one little stripe where the measurements are stamped so I can see how much is left in it.  Will this work for keeping its strength or not?  Thought about painting it black but then i was worried about all of the extra heat that would make in the tank.  thanks for any info.

I'm not sure but many chemicals are light sensitive must be stored in brown/opaque containers.  In a pool we add cyanuric acid to stop the light from decomposing the dissolved chlorine.

There was a study on heat and time, but I cannot find it.

EDIT:  Not it, but interesting.

Sodium hypochlorite typically decomposes due to heat (the degradation rate doubles for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit above 70 degrees Fahrenheit), ultraviolet light, and contaminants. - http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:VxSi62GSA6wJ:www.odysseymanufacturing.com/bleach_information.doc+sodium+hypochlorite+degradation+rate&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

I wonder if I could add some cyanuric Acid to my tank to keep it from degrading?  Just pool stabilizer right?

I SERIOUSLY doubt it.  In a pool, the chlorine is in the 1-3ppm range.  In you tank, it's ~ 150,000ppm.  BIG difference.

I thought about doing the same thing you mentioned awhile back Curtis. I have 2 370 gallon tanks on my trailer. In the summer time I just keep them empty and in the winter time I keep 100 gallons in the front tank just to add weight to the truck for when it rains here. I use to have a real problem until I started doing what I mentioned.
