This is, by far, my favorite inlet strainer. It's like a piece of straight pipe with a screen tube hanging diagonally in the water stream.

Russ,
I really like your attitude towards "beef"..
I just have to push "clear-bowl" filters, because of
"I didn't know it was a filter" syndrome.  Eh?

Guys,
go to  ..http://www.pressurewasher.net/control-options-blog/plumbing-a-layout.html
and scroll down to the Tank-Feed SCG image..
Here’s what you see..
Garden-Hose reel feeds a float-valve at the tank for easy filling.
The ball-valve in between stops tank feed and allows force-feed to pump.
The 3-way ball valve on the outlet of the water tank allows gravity-feed to the pump,
or garden hose feed from the hose reel to the pump.

Note:  when you feed through a filter with garden hose pressure,  we have had the best luck
with filters by Spraying Systems.. the bowls don’t seem to crack as easy as others.

Also, if you do two ball valves instead of the 3-way, you have the option of filling your tank a little faster,
whilst  ye  feed the pump with “almost” garden hose pressure..

most importantly,
for y’all using Spot-Free Rinse..
you can pre-fill yer tank with Spot-Free,
then use  Street-pressure  water  to wash,  before you rinse.. misering  the spot-free.
Auto-Detailers,  and Window-Washers usually ask us for these options.

By the way.. after the image was taken,
we added a filter between the garden hose reel, and the float valve in the tank..
this eliminates any debris the water brings in, from clogging the screen in the float-valve.

RO or deionized water. There are also chemical additives to make water spot less. Not necessarily spotless, but greatly reduced.
