White Film on Wood Fence?
« on: January 31, 2010, 04:09:40 PM »
I pressure washed my wood fence that is 10 years old.  I didn't use any chemicals on it and used a 40 degree tip. I have a 3800 psi, 5 gpm machine.   The fence came out looking great for the most part, but I noticed a "white film" on most sections of the fence after it dried. What did I do wrong?  Best Plan of Action on Wood Fences?

Thanks,
Sam

When wood is cleaned, especially with high pressure or strong chemicals it will fur. That fur (on a deck) needs to be sanded off and happens to a small degree on just about every job. 3500 psi is way too much pressure for wood. 800-1000 is plenty with the use of the proper cleaning chems.

Thanks for the reply Ken.  What degree tip to you recommend for cleaning wood deck or fences using the proper chemical of course?

Also, do I have to sand all the "fur" off the fence or and I treat it again with chemicals to repair it?

Thanks in advance.

You will need to sand the wood now. Click on the link for the store at the top of the page and purchase some F18 and some F8. When you order, Bob will give you directions on how to use the chems. It will save you a lot of headache in the future. Like it was said earlier, you will probably always have some furring to some degree. I usually use and osborne brush on a makita buffer to remove the fur. In my opinion its a lot faster than sanding. Also do a search and there is a ton of info on this subject.

Its not the degree of the tip that is relevant but the orifice. The larger the orifice, the lower your pressure will drop. On your machine a 4010 is a good nozzle for wood restoration. (40 degree spray pattern, #10 orifice)

I wouldn't worry about it on a fence. Its more critical on a deck that you would be staining. You have to factor about an hour of sanding into every deck if you are going to do them correctly.
